Relief in sight: European Council adopts Omnibus I initiative
The abolition of civil liability, a more flexible timetable for the start of application, more practical requirements for climate plans and a weakening of the obligation to terminate contracts in the event of breaches in the supply chain - all this and much more was decided by the European Council at the end of June 2025 with the adoption of the Omnibus I initiative - a step towards relieving the burden on business in the midst of increasing regulatory complexity. The initiative entails targeted adjustments and clarifications to various pieces of EU legislation, including the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
This proposal is part of the Omnibus I package presented by the European Commission on February 26, 2025, which aims to simplify and reduce the burden of existing sustainability requirements in EU law. For companies, this will not only provide legal relief, but also strategic leeway in the implementation of their sustainability and compliance goals.
An overview of important changes in the course of the Omnibus I initiative to the original CSDDD is summarized in the following overview:

CSDDD vs. Omnibus I
The revised CSDDD requirements could significantly reduce the burden on companies. Reduced inspection obligations, extended deadlines and clearer regulations will reduce the implementation effort. However, the actual effect depends on the individual risk situation. The affected companies should use the time gained to strategically integrate the requirements into their internal processes.
